Hours & Guarantee: 10 Hours/Day | 40 Hours/Week | Day Shift (07:00 AM – 4:30 PM).
Weekend & Call Requirements: Every other weekend required | No on-call coverage.
Facility Bill Rate: $59.00 / hour.
Position Overview & Clinical Scope:
An acute care regional hospital in eastern Michigan is seeking a Temporary Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) for a 13-week day-shift assignment.
Working in a comprehensive hospital laboratory serving emergency, surgical, oncology, and inpatient units, the MLS collects and processes diagnostic specimens, performs blood banking and laboratory testing, and maintains equipment accuracy following accreditation guidelines and quality control protocols.
Key Responsibilities & Laboratory Operations
Specimen Collection & Processing:
- Phlebotomy & Specimen Accessioning: Obtain blood samples using venipuncture and skin puncture techniques; verify patient identifiers, match requisition forms, and accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Laboratory Operations & Quality Control: Assist medical technologists and pathologists with designated diagnostic testing, maintaining specimen integrity according to established guidelines.
- Safety & Infection Control: Dispose of biohazardous materials, blood products, and sharps in accordance with OSHA standards and state/federal laws; organize and maintain sterile drawing trays and clean workspaces.
Equipment & Administrative Support:
- Instrument Maintenance: Assist with maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, including Siemens and Grifols diagnostic instrumentation.
- Billing & Records: Enter patient demographics, billing, and insurance details into appropriate healthcare information systems.
Candidate Submission & Qualification Requirements
Experience & Certifications:
- Clinical Experience: Minimum of 2+ years of current Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) experience in a hospital laboratory setting [REQUIRED].
- Professional Certification: Active ASCP Certification (Medical Laboratory Scientist / MT) [REQUIRED; documentation required].
- Life Support: Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross [REQUIRED; documentation required].
- Contract Experience: Prior travel/contract experience [PREFERRED].
